New inquiry into death of UN's Dag Hammarskjold

(AP) ? A group of international jurists say they'll be reinvestigating the 1961 death of U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjokld, one of the Cold War's most enduring mysteries.

A statement released Wednesday on the jurists' behalf said the team would reexamine the case with an eye toward trying to get at the "whole truth" of what happened to him.

Hammarskjold, widely viewed as the U.N.'s most effective leader, perished when his plane went down over modern-day Zambia on the night of Sept. 17, 1961.

Three investigations failed to determine the cause of the crash, leaving his fate clouded by conspiracy theory.

The new inquiry has no official standing but includes high-profile judges, including South African Justice Richard Goldstone, who led the U.N. fact-finding mission on the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
