Wendy's CEO: Our wounds were 'self-inflicted' (AP)

NEW YORK ? Wendy's new CEO on Monday called the dour results of the past few years "self-inflicted wounds" and vowed to do better, laying out plans that included hiring top-tier workers and reclaiming market share from higher-end competitors like Five Guys and Smashburger.

Emil Brolick, the CEO since September, told investors on Monday that he was intent on winning back customers, jaded by a stale menu and inconsistent service, as well as investors, who have grown weary of "a little bit of overpromising and under-delivering."

And rather than blaming the struggling economy for the revenue declines and quarterly losses of the past few years, Brolick said that the company's problems were its own fault. Though Wendy's Co. had carved out a niche in the restaurant business as fast food for grownups, it had lost its way in recent years.

"These are not DNA issues," said Brolick, who also worked at Wendy's during more halcyon days of the late '80s and early '90s. "These are issues we caused, and any time you have self-inflicted wounds, you can correct self-inflicted wounds."

Brolick said he was intent on taking back lost market share from the likes of fast-casual competitors like Panera and Chipotle, by offering food that was just as good but at a lower price. The company has revamped its menu and is remodeling stores. It sold Arby's, which had been a drag on earnings, over the summer. And it's now intent on hiring "five star" employees in line with those at the fast-casual chains, Brolick said.

"Those folks at the bottom corner, there's a job waiting for them at our competitors," said Brolick, who has also hired a new general counsel at the Ohio headquarters and is adding a chief marketing officer and chief people officer.

Brolick, who was most recently a top executive at Yum Brands Inc., said he's bringing all Wendy's locations up to consistent standards for friendliness and cleanliness, rather than the current, unpredictable state of "one there is really, really good but this one over here isn't quite what it needs to be."

"We've made great progress in getting rid of those F restaurants and getting more A's and B's, but we're still in that territory," Brolick said.

Like many fast-food chains, Wendy's is taking some of its turnaround plans from McDonald's book. The much-larger burger chain has done well throughout the recession and its aftermath by trying to reinvent itself as a hip, healthy place. New offerings like fancy coffee drinks and smoothies, and remodeled restaurants with wireless access, have brought in customers who previously might have shunned it. At the same time, McDonald's has kept prices at fast-food levels so that its reliable base of cash-strapped customers doesn't flee for cheaper hamburgers at the gas stations.

McDonald's has run into some resistance from franchisees who sometimes have to foot the bill for the changes. Brolick said Wendy's franchisees were "very, very supportive "of the plans. He acknowledged that "we are going to spend a lot of their money," then added later: "The economics have to work. They do work."

Brolick's message to investors, who gathered at the Nasdaq building in New York, came a few hours after the company reported mixed results for the fourth quarter.

Wendy's income from continuing operations fell 30 percent to $4.3 million in the last three months of the year, down from $6.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. That year-ago number strips out the effect of Arby's, which Wendy's sold this summer to a private-equity firm.

Wendy's marriage with Arby's was short-lived. It began in the depths of the financial crisis in fall 2008, and ended when managers said they wanted to focus on the Wendy's brand alone. Wendy's said Monday it spent nearly $46 million over 2011 to break up with Arby's, including severance costs for some employees and retention bonuses for others.

Revenue rose 5.6 percent to $615 million, narrowly beating the $613 million predicted by analysts. The chain credited more customers visiting and spending more when they did, including on the revamped Dave's Hot 'N Juicy cheeseburger. Higher prices also helped.

Revenue at restaurants open at least a year climbed 4.4 percent in North America, the highest number in nearly 8 years, according to the company. That's a key measure of a company's health because it strips out the effect of newly opened or closed stores.

On a per-share basis, adjusted earnings were 4 cents, in line with the expectations of analysts polled by FactSet. That number excluded one-time charges like the costs for selling Arby's and writing down the value of some of its assets. With those charges, per-share earnings would have been 1 cent per share.

Last week, Barclays Capital analyst Jeffrey Bernstein spoke favorably of the changes at Wendy's, saying the company has greater potential for long-term earnings growth than competitors but is trading at a comparative discount. Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Sara Senatore said Monday that though revenue numbers beat her expectations, some of the earnings predictions that the company made for 2012 were below Wall Street's expectations.

Wendy's shares fell 20 cents, or 3.8 percent, to close at $5.01.

Honda sees sharp drop in profit on Thai floods (AP)

TOKYO ? Battered by the strong yen and supply disruptions from Thailand's floods, Honda said Tuesday that its net earnings in the October-December quarter tumbled 41 percent to 47.6 billion yen ($625 million) and projected a sharply lower full-year profit.

It's been a tough year for the Japanese automobile and motorcycle maker. Honda had just begun to recover from the March earthquake and tsunami, which damaged some of its suppliers, when Thailand's worst floods in 50 years swamped its vehicle assembly plant in Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok.

That disaster dealt such a blow to Honda that it scrapped its earnings forecast when it last reported earnings results in October.

Now Honda predicts its net profit for the fiscal year through March would drop nearly 60 percent to 215 billion yen.

Honda Motor Co., which makes the Accord sedan and Odyssey minivan, stopped making cars at its Thai plant in October, and said in a statement Tuesday that it was making progress draining the factory and cleaning up equipment, and expected production to resume there at the end of March.

The flooding also disrupted the output at many Honda suppliers in Thailand, forcing it to reduce production as far away as the U.S. and Canada. Honda said production in neighboring Asian countries interrupted by the problems in Thailand was expected to return to normal by April.

All told, the problems related to flooding in Thailand have cost the company 260,000 vehicles in lost production worldwide, according to Tomohiro Okada, a company spokesman.

The company said it is working with the local industrial park to build water protection walls around the plant and will make requests of the Thai government to take steps to prevent the risk of flooding in the future. The Thai plant makes the Jazz, Civic, Accord, CR-V sports utility vehicle and other vehicles.

The Thai flooding affected many other Japanese companies, reflecting the increasingly interconnected nature of today's global economy. Toshiba Corp. on Tuesday cited the disaster as one reason behind the 10.6 billion yen net loss it reported for the most recent quarter.

A bright spot for Honda was its motorcycle business, which is booming in emerging markets. Motorcycle sales rose 6.3 percent during the quarter from the same quarter a year ago to nearly 3.1 million units.

Quarterly sales slid 8 percent during the fiscal third quarter to 1.942 trillion yen. The company projects full-year sales will decline 12.2 percent to 7.85 trillion yen.

The strong yen, which erodes exporters' foreign earned income when repatriated, also ate into the company's income.

Global vehicle sales in the quarter declined 2.9 percent from a year ago to 830,000 units, the company said. Vehicle sales in Japan rose 16 percent and North America increased 2 percent from the same quarter a year ago, while unit sales in Europe, Asia and other regions fell.

Consider a 3D Monitor For Gaming ? Centired.com - For All Things ...

An excellent monitor can enhance your gaming experience by tenfold. Not only will it have a higher resolution so you can experience a new degree of graphics, an outstanding monitor will have an excellent response rate which keeps images from trailing one another resulting in a ghost effect.

With developers embracing new 3D technology in the gaming world, a 3D monitor could take your gaming to the following degree. Above 100 games can be bought in 3D including, World of Warcraft, Warcraft Reloaded, Gridlock, Dawn of the Dead and Quake Live.

A good 3D monitor will cost $300- $1000 dollars and will still work in 2D. You simply must wear special 3D glasses to see the game in 3D. Some monitors is fine with the red and blue traditional 3D glasses but others will demand electronic shuttering glasses.

The more reduced response rate a monitor possesses the better it will be for gaming. A response rate of 5 milliseconds is about the highest rate that may work efficiently for gaming and anything lower than that should provide faster, better gaming.

Brightness is also a ingredient to consider when buying a monitor. LED lighted monitors provide you with the best light and sharpest display. They also use a lower measure of energy when compared to LCD monitors.

Resolution is critical for gaming monitors because if you have a high resolution you can view fine details within the game. This is important in case you are playing a combat game because you?ll have the opportunity to see your opponent from far away.

A 19- 23 inch monitor would be a good size for a gaming monitor. However you can never really go too big and when you have experienced gaming on a large screen it will be hard to return. There are lots of good brands that offer gaming monitors like Samsung, Sony, Acer, ViewSonic and Dell.

As technology advances 3D monitors and gaming monitors will simply get better with time. By reading reviews online from professionals and consumers you can discover much more about what works best for specific variants of games you play.

David works with Dell. If you?re a gamer consider a 3D monitor, which can mean a better experience. If you decide that is not for you, perhaps a 23 inch monitor will be sufficient.

Alona Elkayam: Icon of the Day: In Search of Lost Time With Salon Tea

Nostalgia is making a serious comeback. So while you tell me about your new 4G phone, it won?t be non sequitur that I respond with an exquisite description of my grandmother?s old strawberry and whip cream dessert she used to make my brother and I every Friday night. Your current Super Bowl chit chat will be met with descriptions of my past as a teen in my living room making up various killer dance routines to Shannon?s ?Let the music play.?

Ahhhhhh, yes nostalgia sure is making a comeback. Woody Allen makes it the main character in his movie, Midnight in Paris; Urban Outfitters honors nostalgia with the USB turntable, among other throwback products; and Tracy Stern urges us to savor it with her Salon Tea brand.

While Woody focuses on the idea that every generation thinks the previous generation was simpler, Ms. Stern focuses on something less debatable: Lost time. All Ms. Stern wants is for us to put our iPhones down. Pour un instant s'il vous pla?t. She wants us to experience what Proust wrote about In Search of Lost Time when he bit into that madeleine and ?ceased now to feel mediocre, contingent, mortal." And she?s giving us a chance. From her line of teas named after turn of the century archetypes like ?The Dandy? or ?The Society Hostess? to her instruction book, Tea Party, there is a place for nostalgia in all of us.

If you men and women out there aren?t ready for tea parties (Boston or English) just yet, how about just cherishing the moments between Facebook updates, Siri results, or while staring at the Twitter whale -- preferably with a cup of tea.

GOP candidates' pitch to voters: I'm your leader (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The pitch from the Republican presidential contenders to voters sounds a lot like the children's game of follow the leader.

When Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich aren't puffing up their own leadership credentials, they're running down the leadership skills of one another and of President Barack Obama.

If anyone missed Monday's conference call from the Romney campaign about Gingrich's record as a "failed leader," not to worry. They could have tuned in to Tuesday's conference call. Or Wednesday's. Or Thursday's. Or checked out the "unreliable leader" banner splashed across a Romney news release that labeled Gingrich "unhinged."

Romney's political biography, meanwhile, is all about his leadership as a businessman, Massachusetts governor and savior of the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

It's hard to miss Gingrich's frequent broadsides at Romney for failing to provide consistent, visionary leadership. Or the former House speaker's pronouncements that he, by contrast, offers "exactly the kind of bold, tough leader the American people want." Or Gingrich's descriptions of all that was accomplished in his four years as speaker in the 1990s.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, trailing in the polls, keeps trying to muscle his way into the conversation by offering himself as the steady bet who can be counted on to offer more reliable conservative leadership than "erratic" Gingrich or "moderate" Romney.

In a race where all the candidates are trying to out-conservative one another, stressing leadership credentials gives the GOP rivals a way to try to distinguish themselves. In a year when Obama's own leadership skills are seen as one of his weakest qualities, it gives the Republicans one more arrow in their quiver as they argue over who would be most electable in a matchup with Obama come November.

Leadership is always a part of the equation in presidential elections. In 2008, for example, the candidates all were abuzz with claims that they offered "transformational" leadership.

"I want to transform this country," Obama said when he announced he was running.

This year, leadership is getting an extra dose of attention, perhaps because of statistics such as this: The share of Americans viewing Obama as a strong leader slipped from 77 percent at the start of his presidency to 52 percent in a Pew Research Center poll released this month. Among Republicans, only about one-fourth of those surveyed in the most recent poll said Obama was a strong leader, compared with 80 percent of Democrats.

At a campaign debate last week in Tampa, Fla., Gingrich and Romney both turned a question about electability into an answer about the L-word.

"This is going to come down a question of leadership," Romney said. Then the former Massachusetts governor recited his track record as a leader in business and government and took a dig at Gingrich for having to "resign in disgrace" when he was speaker in the 1990s.

Gingrich, answering the same question, aligned himself with the leadership record of conservative hero Ronald Reagan and offered himself as someone "prepared to be controversial when necessary" to bring about great change.

The answers offer a window into how differently the two candidates define leadership: Romney more as a manager with business school credentials, Gingrich more as a big-thinking visionary.

The leadership argument is a particularly potent campaign weapon for Romney because a number of Republicans who served in Congress with Gingrich have been happy to describe his shortcomings in running the House.

"If you were somebody trying to serve with him, you were always sort of left standing with your hands empty in terms of moving forward with an actual plan or putting a plan to paper," Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Calif., said of Gingrich on a Romney campaign conference call Thursday. "So for me, it's an example that he's just not an effective leader. I think Mitt has the temperament and the ability to lead."

Gingrich, who resigned after a spate of ethics problems and a poor showing for House Republicans in the 1998 elections, managed to turn even his resignation as speaker into evidence that he's a strong leader.

"I took responsibility for the fact that our results weren't as good as they should be," he said in the Tampa debate. "I think that's what a leader should do."

As for the turbulence of his tenure as speaker, Gingrich casts that, too, as evidence of his bold leadership.

"Look, I wish everybody had loved me, but I'd rather be effective representing the American people than be popular inside Washington," he said earlier in the campaign.

Stephen Wayne, a presidential scholar at Georgetown University, said the harsh judgment of Obama's presidential leadership by Republicans and even some Democrats in part is due to the high hopes that he raised during the 2008 campaign. Obama the president has been measured against the words of Obama the candidate ever since.

Now that it's campaign season again, says Wayne, "he's not competing against his own image, he's competing against a real life person that has frailties. ... In a sense, that lowers the bar for Obama."

Arms from Libya could reach Boko Haram, al Qaeda: U.N. (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? The Libyan civil war may have given militant groups in Africa's Sahel region like Boko Haram and al Qaeda access to large weapons caches, according to a U.N. report released on Thursday.

The report on the impact of the Libyan civil war on countries of the Sahel region that straddle the Sahara - including Nigeria, Niger and Chad - also says some national authorities believe the Islamist sect Boko Haram has increasing links to al Qaeda's North African wing. Boko Haram killed more than 500 people last year and more than 250 this year in Nigeria.

The U.N. Security Council met to discuss the report, which was prepared by a U.N. assessment team that met with officials from countries in the region. The discussion highlighted the deep divisions between Western powers and Russia over NATO's intervention in the North African oil-producing state.

"The governments of the countries visited indicated that, in spite of efforts to control their borders, large quantities of weapons and ammunition from Libyan stockpiles were smuggled into the Sahel region," the report said.

Such weapons include "rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns with anti-aircraft visors, automatic rifles, ammunition, grenades, explosives (Semtex), and light anti-aircraft artillery (light caliber bi-tubes) mounted on vehicles," it said.

More advanced weapons such as surface-to-air-missiles and man-portable air defense systems, known as MANPADS, also may have reached groups in the region, the report said.

U.N. special envoy to Libya Ian Martin, however, has told the Security Council that Libya's missing stocks of MANPADS have largely remained inside the country.

The report said some countries believe weapons have been smuggled into the Sahel by former fighters in Libya - Libyan army regulars and mercenaries who fought on behalf of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, who was ousted and killed by rebels.

Some of the countries told the assessment team that they had registered an increase in arms trade across West Africa.

"Some of the weapons may be hidden in the desert and could be sold to terrorist groups like al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Boko Haram or other criminal organizations," the U.N. report said.

'UNCONTROLLED SPREAD OF WEAPONS'

Lynn Pascoe, U.N. under-secretary-general for political affairs, told the Security Council that the new Libyan government insists many of the problems related to weapons and the Sahel originated when Gaddafi was still in power.

"Some of the problems are directly related to the fall of the Gaddafi regime in Libya but the nation's interlocutors emphasize that most of the problems are long-standing ones," he said.

British, French and U.S. envoys echoed the Libyan view that the problems existed long before the civil war.

Russia, which has criticized the toppling of Gaddafi and accused NATO of using a U.N. mandate to protect civilians in Libya as a springboard for regime change, said the U.N. report highlighted problems unleashed by NATO's intervention in Libya.

Russian envoy Alexander Pankin said the U.N. report confirmed that the "real consequences of the Libyan crisis, the real scope of which is only beginning to come to light, are a serious threat to security and stability in the entire region."

He said Moscow was especially concerned about "the uncontrolled spread of weapons in Libya and beyond its border."

The U.N. report said Nigeria was not the only country worried about the activities of Boko Haram. It said the group also was in Niger, adding that some governments believed Boko Haram members from Nigeria and Chad had received training at al Qaeda training camps in Mali in 2011.

"Although Boko Haram has concentrated its terrorist acts inside Nigeria, seven of its members were arrested while transiting through the Niger to Mali," it said, adding that they possessed documents about explosives manufacturing, propaganda leaflets and contact details for known al Qaeda members.

Links between al Qaeda and Boko Haram have become "a growing source of concern for the countries of the region," it said.

Europe's top clubs report rising losses in 2010

(AP) ? Europe's top soccer clubs collectively lost more than $2 billion in 2010 and their debts keep rising ahead of plans to sanction clubs for overspending, according to UEFA research published Wednesday.

Financial accounts from about 650 clubs revealed 56 percent lost money in the 2010 financial year, and their total debt was $10.9 billion.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said it was "a last wake-up call" with clubs subject to UEFA's financial fair play monitoring since July 2011. Clubs that overspend in an initial two-year monitoring period can be excluded from UEFA competitions starting in the 2014-15 season.

UEFA's study showed clubs' combined annual loss rose 36 percent, around $520 million, on 2009 figures.

This was despite rising revenues totaling $16.6 billion for top-tier European clubs, an increased income of 6.6 percent. UEFA's research showed that richer and more successful clubs were more likely to spend and lose money.

Of more than 200 clubs playing in UEFA's Champions League and Europa League competitions two years ago, 65 percent spent more than they earned.

Three out of every four clubs earning more than $65 million annually also recorded a loss.

"Clubs tend to spend more in order to obtain a competitive advantage," said Andrea Traverso, the head of UEFA's financial fair play project.

Financial fair play (FFP) rules allow clubs to make a total loss of $6.5 million in the first assessment period, or up to $58 million if a wealthy owner makes a one-off donation to wipe out losses. UEFA will phase in tighter monitoring rules in future years.

UEFA acknowledged that 13 clubs, including several from England, would have failed its break-even tests on their 2010 accounts. The clubs were not identified.

UEFA said 31 clubs, including four this season, have been refused entry to its two main club competitions since financial licensing was introduced in 2004.

However, clubs barred this season were from the small-market leagues of Ireland, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and Romania.

Skepticism has grown over UEFA's willingness to take on big-spending clubs such as Premier League leader Manchester City, whose owners from Abu Dhabi funded a then $318 million loss for 2010-11, the final season before FFP took effect.

French league leader Paris Saint-Germain spent $107 million on players last offseason after being bought by Qatari owners.

UEFA's project was backed by Jean-Michel Aulas, the president of Lyon whose standing in France is threatened by PSG's revival.

Aulas described a "dichotomy" between clubs spending "easy money and money for investment."

"Tomorrow's paradigm (for clubs) must be built on building stadiums and building youth academies ? tangible assets that can benefit football in general," Aulas said.

Taylor Armstrong Accuses Late Husband of Spying, Paranoia

It's been far too long since Taylor Armstrong bashed her late husband in public.

But, don't worry, the latest issue of Us Weekly contains excerpts from the reality star's disgusting upcoming memoir, "Hiding from Reality."

Taylor Armstrong and Russell Armstrong Photo

In the book, Taylor describes Russell as a paranoid stalker, someone who constantly asked her about past sexual partners and even posed as a potential employer in order to run a background check on his wife with her alma mater.

She even found a tape recorder under her home office desk once.

"For the next nearly six years, I always assumed I was being recorded in the car and at home," Taylor writes. "I was always careful to make sure the content of my conversations was very clear."

Russell supposedly defended his actions by saying he had "been burned before" and just wanted to get to know his wife as well as possible.

Years after that discovery, Armstrong added, "I went into my email settings and found that he had set it up so that all of my emails were forwarded to him the moment I received them."

Taylor says she never changed the setting or asked Russell about this issue, and it's not like we can get his take on the allegations.

What a sad, pathetic, money-hungry woman.

Raid In Somalia: U.S. Military Frees Hostages Held Since October

MOGADISHU, Somalia ? U.S. military forces helicoptered into Somalia in a nighttime raid Wednesday and freed two hostages, an American and a Dane, while killing nine pirates, officials and a pirate source said.

The Danish Refugee Council confirmed the two aid workers, American Jessica Buchanan and Dane Poul Hagan Thisted, were freed "during an operation in Somalia." Buchanan, 32, and Thisted, 60, had been working with a de-mining unit of the Danish Refugee Council when they were kidnapped.

President Barack Obama appeared to refer to the mission before his State of the Union address in Washington Tuesday night. As he entered the House chamber in the U.S. Capitol, he pointed at Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in the crowd and said, "Good job tonight."

A Western official told The Associated Press that the raid was carried out by U.S. military forces. A second official said the helicopters and the hostages flew to a U.S. military base called Camp Lemonier in the Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information had not been released publicly.

Panetta visited Camp Lemonier just over a month ago, A key U.S. ally in this region, Djibouti has the only U.S. base in sub-Saharan Africa. It hosts the military's Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.

The Danish Refugee Council said both freed hostages are unharmed "and at a safe location." The group said in a separate statement that the two "are on their way to be reunited with their families."

The two aid workers appear to have been kidnapped by criminals ? sometimes referred to as pirates ? and not by Somalia's al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabab. As large ships at sea have increased their defenses against pirate attacks, gangs have looked for other money making opportunities like land-based kidnappings.

A pirate who gave his name as Bile Hussein said he had spoken to pirates at the scene of the raid and they reported that nine pirates had been killed. A second pirate who gave his name as Ahmed Hashi said two helicopters attacked at about 2 a.m. at the site where the hostages were being held about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the Somali town of Adado.

Maj. Kelly Cahalan, a military spokeswoman at U.S. Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany, said she had no information on the raid. A spokeswoman at the Pentagon had no immediate comment. U.S. military rescue operations are typically carried out by highly trained special forces.

The Danish Refugee Council had earlier enlisted traditional Somali elders and members of civil society to seek the release of the two hostages. The two were seized in October from the portion of Galkayo town under the control of a government-allied clan militia. The aid agency has said that Somalis held demonstrations demanding the pair's quick release.

Their Somali colleague was detained by police on suspicion of being involved in their kidnapping.

The two hostages were working in northern Somalia for the Danish Demining Group, whose experts have been clearing mines and unexploded ordnance in conflict zones in Africa and the Middle East.

Several hostages are still being held in Somalia, including a British tourist and two Spanish doctors seized from neighboring Kenya, and an American journalist kidnapped on Saturday.

John Edwards, associate program director for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high energy density (HED) science at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has been selected as a 2011 American Physical Society (APS) fellow.

Edwards was cited in the plasma physics category for fundamental contributions to hydrodynamics in HED physics and for his leadership in the National Ignition Campaign (NIC) on LLNL's National Ignition Facility. He joined LLNL in 1998, and over the course of his first five years, played a leading role in developing much of the foundation for the HED laser program in place today.

Edwards has since turned his focus almost entirely to ICF, leading groups in target physics, serving as the ignition team leader and, in his latest role, defining the direction of NIC experiments.

"Working on the National Ignition Campaign has been the highlight of my career," Edwards said. "I feel privileged to work on a program as important and challenging as this, on the premier laser facility in the world with a truly remarkable team. It's hard not to be excited about that."

APS fellowships are awarded after extensive review and are considered a distinct honor because the evaluation process, conducted by the fellowship committees of individual divisions, topical groups and forums, relies on nomination and recommendation by one's professional peers. Election to APS fellowship is limited to no more than one half of 1 percent of APS' membership for a given year. Nearly 250 members were elected 2011 APS fellows.

Steven Tyler Sings Painful National Anthem At AFC Championship Game (Video)

OMG did you see Steve Tyler sing the national anthem at the AFC Championship game today? If not then you missed a horrendous rendition of the infamous song. Seriously it was god-awful and I have the video to prove it. As I sat here anxiously awaiting the AFC Championship game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots I got the oh so not great pleasure of listening to Tyler belt out the national anthem. To say he was bad is an understatement, it literally hurt my ears listening to him sing or attempt to sing I should day. When Steven was first announced I thought he was kind of a rather odd choice but then I was told he was a Patriots fan, not sure if that is true or not but it is what I was told. Anyway I just so happened to not be paying attention to the TV when the performance began but boy did I quickly tune in as soon as I herd his voice because it was painful. I honestly can?t describe to you how bad it was, al I can say is it sucked. I understand that Tyler is not as on [...]

New York Health Insurance Plans ? Find Affordable Self-Employed ...

Many of you may be wondering what your insurance options are especially if you belong to any of the following categories:

Self-employed
Out of work
Have an employer who doesn?t offer insurance

Unfortunately, health insurance outside of work is often very expensive. The following are ways to help you find an affordable health insurance to suit your needs and budget.

Get Covered Under a Parent?s Plan
This may well be the cheapest option. If you are under twenty-six, you may be included in your parent?s health plan. According Healthcare.gov, this can be done even if you are married, not sharing the same residence, and not dependent on them financially. Even if you pay your parents back for your share of the premium costs, this is most probably the cheapest option you can find.

For Special Cases: Federal/State Options
High Risk Pool/Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan: Under the Affordable Care Act, those having troubles with their insurance application because of a pre-existing condition can now avail of health insurance coverage by applying for a PCIP. The plan will cover major medical and prescription drug costs. Premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and out of pocket limits vary by state. In New York for example, the premium ranges from $362 to $421 monthly.

Medicaid: This program offers health coverage for individuals with limited income and/or satisfy other criteria for qualification, such as disability or pregnancy. More information about this program is available in your state?s department of health.

Find Your Own Insurance Provider Using Comparison Tools
If the steps listed above do not apply to your particular case, then you will need to get a private health insurance plan that will cover either just you or your entire family. HealthCare.gov plan finder and eHealthInsurance.com are two tools you can use to find the best plan to suit you. You may need to check both because they might have different lists of plans.

Plan Types
Aside from traditional health insurance plan types, such as an HMO plan where you consult a primary care physician who refers you to a specialist when needed, or a PPO plan where you can choose your health care providers from a network, there are two types of plans that can save you money:

Emergency Coverage: Hospital-only plans are very cheap, it is ideal for healthy individuals who only need hospital care insurance in emergency cases. Additionally, new regulations require some of these types of plans to offer preventive care services, such as flu shots and well-child visits, at no extra charge.

High Deductible, HSA-compatible Health Plans: On a monthly basis, these plans can be more affordable than regular ones. In this plan, your coverage will only start after you have paid a certain amount for (usually a few thousand dollars) health care. With a Health Savings Account (HSA), you can use pre-tax dollars money to pay for that high deductible. This can save you significant tax dollars, and unlike FSAs, it is not necessary to use up all your money every year.

Associations
Joining an association or a group can help you get a more affordable health insurance. Insurance companies have cheaper group rates compared to individual rates.

The illusion of courage: Why people mispredict their behavior in embarrassing situations

The illusion of courage: Why people mispredict their behavior in embarrassing situations [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 17-Jan-2012

PITTSBURGHWhether it's investing in stocks, bungee jumping or public speaking, why do we often plan to take risks but then "chicken out" when the moment of truth arrives?

In a new paper in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, scientists from the University of Colorado Boulder and Carnegie Mellon University argue that this "illusion of courage" is one example of an "empathy gap" that is, our inability to imagine how we will behave in future emotional situations. According to the empathy gap theory, when the moment of truth is far off you aren't feeling, and therefore are out of touch with, the fear you are likely to experience when push comes to shove. The research team also included Cornell University's David Dunning and former CMU graduate student Ned Welch, currently a consultant for McKinsey.

In a series of three experiments, the researchers found that people overestimate their willingness to engage in psychologically distant embarrassing public performances, and also found that they could reduce this illusion of courage by inducing immediate emotions that effectively put them in touch with the fear they would experience.

In the first two experiments, college students were asked if they would be willing to engage in a future embarrassing situation telling a funny story to their class in one study, and dancing to James Brown's "Sex Machine" in front of the class in the other in exchange for a few dollars. Students were either asked outright or after being exposed to short films that aroused mild experiences of fear and anger. Students who did not view movie clips significantly overestimated their willingness to sing or dance. When they experienced negative emotions fear and anger as a result of watching the movie clips, students were much more accurate in predicting their own future lack of interest in performing.

"Because social anxiety associated with the prospect of facing an embarrassing situation is such a common and powerful emotion in everyday life, we might think that we know ourselves well enough to predict our own behavior in such situations," said Leaf Van Boven, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Colorado Boulder. "But the ample experience most of us should have gained with predicting our own future behavior isn't sufficient to overcome the empathy gap our inability to anticipate the impact of emotional states we aren't currently experiencing."

The illusion of courage has practical consequences. "People frequently face potential embarrassing situations in everyday life, and the illusion of courage is likely to cause us to expose ourselves to risks that, when the moment of truth arrives, we wish we hadn't taken," said George Loewenstein, the Herbert A. Simon University Professor of Economics and Psychology within CMU's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. "Knowing that, we might choose to be more cautious, or we might use the illusion of courage to help us take risks we think are worth it, knowing full well that we are likely to regret the decision when the moment of truth arrives."

Verizon FiOS: to beat 'em, first join 'em (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) ? Verizon Communications Inc is pushing hard to move its "FiOS" TV service beyond the set-top box and onto the latest gadgets - from TVs and tablets to gaming consoles - to fend off competition from online video services such as Netflix Inc, Amazon Inc and Apple's Inc iTunes.

Verizon plans to extend its service to "dozens and dozens" of devices in connections that let users stream Web video alongside FiOS content.the next 12 to 24 months, Joe Ambeault, director of product management for FiOS TV, told Reuters in an intereview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The company announced deals this week to get its service onto "smart" TVs from LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics Co. Unlike traditional televisions, these sets - which Verizon is testing - have Internet

Verizon, which had already forged a FiOS deal with Microsoft Corp for its Xbox gaming console, is also negotiating with content providers to allow consumers to access its TV service on devices such as tablets outside the home.

Such partnerships could encourage cost-conscious consumers to end their FiOS TV subscriptions, but Ambeault noted he had no choice, but to compete with Web-based services.

"I've a whole new set of competitors," Ambeault said, adding that his embrace of these devices is proactive. "It's too late after people are already fleeing."

Another big source of competition could be iTunes. Apple is widely expected to launch a living-room television as soon as this year. Ambeault does not know if or when that might happen, but if it does, he hopes to make sure FiOS content is available on such a product.

"We would love to integrate our content onto the Apple TV," he said. "My alternative is to do nothing and ignore the device, and you go there anyway as a consumer ... or be on that device and have a fighting chance and keep your business."

Ambeault also noted that, if FiOS is associated with innovative hardware, it can help keep consumers interested. He cited a feature on the upcoming LG TV, which allows the user to control the TV by waving a "magic wand" remote control instead of using traditional controls.

To help ensure FiOS is the service consumers associate with such innovation, Ambeault is planning joint advertising with LG, similar to the way Verizon Wireless features its latest phones in advertisements for its wireless service.

"If I'm there first, I've a higher likelihood of winning. If I'm not on that device, I'm out of here," he added.

Chad Mendes finding plenty of love from Brazilian fans before UFC 142

When the UFC hit Brazil in August for UFC 134, the crowd was raucous, to say the least. They were so excited to see their fighters, they cheered, chanted, and threw beer through the duration of the card. This time around, that environment might be intimidating for an American fighter facing one of a beloved Brazilian fighter.

Chad Mendes has not faced any hostility since arriving in Rio de Janeiro earlier this week to fight Jose Aldo Jr. In fact, he's found a warm reception.

"I was surprised by how supportive the fans were. I didn't expect to receive the cheers and I appreciated it," Mendes said at today's press conference in Rio.

"I think the fans realize how important this fight is for the featherweight division, for the UFC and for the sport. I'm ready to go and I know Jose is. I can't wait to do this."

Their fight for the UFC's featherweight belt is a match-up between two young guns who are known for very different skills. Champion Aldo has snapping kicks and speed in his striking. Mendes was a NCAA Division I finalist in wrestling and uses those skills in his fights.

[Don't miss the action: Watch UFC 142 live on Y! Sports]

Mendes says that he has prepared for Aldo's advantages.

"We've worked on that in camp, particularly in getting ready for his striking. Without giving away too much strategy, I am really confident in my ability to take this fight where I want it. This is the moment I've been waiting for since I was a kid. A few years ago, I'd never fought outside of California. Saturday, I'm walking into the Octagon in Rio and I'm planning on leaving with the UFC featherweight title."

So who will walk away with the UFC featherweight belt? Will Aldo defend the belt for the fifth straight time, or will Mendes keep his record unblemished? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

UFC 142: Mike Pyle is fired up to fight in front of hostile crowd

Mike Pyle has fought all over the world, but even he admits tomorrow night at UFC 142, Rio de Janeiro could be unlike anything he's ever seen.

"We're fighting and we have to fight other countryman on their soil. That makes it fun. Get out there in some hostile territory," Pyle told ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "It's kind of different. You don't get booed and looked at in strange ways at home. It's cool. Makes me feel like a super villain."

Pyle won't be walking through the Rio crowd with complete unfamiliarity. He cornerd Forrest Griffin back at UFC 134 and saw how intense the Brazilians were that night.

"The energy was ... I just got chill bumps just now thinking about that night when we walked out, how intense the crowd was," Pyle said. "They were into it dude. I can't even put it into words. It was awesome."

Pyle, 36, has fought in Denmark, Russia and the U.K. This will be his first time in Brazil and he's facing Bahia, Brazil native Ricardo Funch. The American is coming off a quick loss against Rory MacDonald. He made sure to make some changes to get back on the right track.

Pyle added a new jiu-jitsu coach, Mitch Coats and Nate Pettit, who's serving as his main coach.
