The smartphone silly season continues, and now that we're about done with major announcements, it's time for the reviews and hands-on coverage to start rolling in. This past week we've published our review of the Motorola RAZR i, the first Intel-powered phone from a major manufacturer. And we've also got our grubby hands on the Galaxy Note 2, and delivered our hands-on walkthrough -- stay tuned for the full review!

Other major stories this week surround the launch of Sony's new flagship smartphone, the Xperia T, and rumors surrounding the HTC One X+, which is said to be a spec-bumped version of the earlier HTC flagship. And in Galaxy Note 2 launch news, we learned that the phone will be available a day early -- tomorrow, Sept. 30, in fact -- at Samsung's leading brand store in Stratford, London. Lucky consumers in South Korea have already had the chance to buy their version of the phone, which launched earlier in the week.

And in update news, the international Galaxy S3 finally started to get its Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates, a little later than we expected. The S3 becomes the first non-Nexus device to receive Jelly Bean, though we're expecting more than a few new phones to ship with Android 4.1 out of the box over the coming month.

----PARIS,TEXAS, TOPIX FORUM DISCUSSION---We reported on the PEDC?s (Paris Economic Development Corporation) plan to get a coordinated plan through a unified plan by paying a Gregg County, Texas, firm to act as "third-party facilitators" at a meeting or two.

Which, in and by itself, is a heck?ova plan ?
Taxpayers, who pay the PEDC?s bills, coughed up at least $1,710 for the consultants. Evidently, an outside firm was needed to ?facilitate? the meeting to get a plan to get a plan, because. . . ?
Surely, the PEDC doesn?t believe no one in our Paris-Lamar County area knows how. . .?
The PEDC also have taxpayers on the hook to pay for a study by an Oklahoma retail development ?expert? they hired, and to pay for a long-term contract for his help in soliciting retail businesses to Paris (see Drowning on Dry Land).
Why is the PEDC even considering bringing in competition for local merchants and businesses? They have enough problems without the PEDC adding to them. The PEDC should be helping, not bringing in competition. It is as if the PEDC has never heard of the ongoing retail campaign urging everyone to "Shop Paris". (But, why is the PEDC involved in ?retail development?? It?s NOT something they're chartered to do...)
A PEDC employee, a ?community development specialist?, has moved or is moving to Georgia. The PEDC will pay her $800 per month for the next 10-months to handle "electronic media? and to maintain the PEDC website. But according to previous reports, the website and its maintenance is being done by CDSuites of Longview, Texas ( see job_creation).
And, no, it is not the money: It is the thinking that leads to the actions -
Taxpayers, through the PEDC, have guaranteed for ten years, $5.8 million for the financing of existing and new debt and around $1.8 million for operating capital for a local firm. The firm?s headquarters are in Paris, but they also have offices in Dallas, Waco, Sulphur Springs, and other Texas communities, as well as in North Carolina.
In exchange, we?re getting a promise of 25 new jobs within the next five years. And the PEDC has given a $105,000 ?cash incentive? for another 10 jobs at the company?s headquarters.
No report of how much money or what kind of guarantees, if any, taxpayers in the firm?s other locations chipped in or provided.
Shouldn?t Paris taxpayers know if the guarantees and/or operating capital they?re providing will be used to help underwrite the firm?s business operations in those communities? How could it not help . . . ?
But, how would we know?
These PEDC actions signal it can do what it wants, and spend the taxpayer?s money for whatever purpose they want, as long as they have some kind of semi-plausible deniability. This is a moral hazard, and weakens confidence in what they say and do.
In all these actions, the PEDC is funding jobs and job creation opportunities for communities ? and states ? in competition against us!
And the PEDC calls what they?re doing ?Economic Development"?
Our question is, ?For whom??

NASA's Curiosity Finds Water Once Flowed On Mars

NASA's newest Mars rover, Curiosity, has snapped photos of rocky outcroppings that jut out from the alien soil, and scientists say they look like the remnants of an ancient stream bed where water once flowed on the surface of the red planet.

The exposed rocks look like broken slabs of concrete sidewalk, about four inches thick, and they are made of rounded bits of gravel in a sandy matrix. The rock has eroded a little bit, and some of the smooth pebbles -? about the size of M&M candies ? have fallen down into a little pile.

Scientists looked at all this, and came to this conclusion: "This is a rock that was formed in the presence of water," says John Grotzinger, project scientist for the mission at the California Institute of Technology.

And not just any water, but a flowing stream.

Scientists have believed for a long time that Mars once had liquid water on its surface. Orbiting spacecraft can see canyons that must have been carved by water. In fact, researchers deliberately picked Curiosity's landing site because it looked like a place where a canyon stream had spilled water onto a plain ? and now it looks like they were right.

Before, we never really saw a rock on Mars where we could tell whether it was wind or water that was doing the transport. And now we have a clear sign of flowing water on Mars and we can get estimates of the size of the flow and so on. It's really fascinating.

Jim Bell, a planetary scientist at Arizona State University who is working on this mission, says the rounded pebbles and cemented sandstones look like what you would find if you were "walking up a stream in your favorite little canyon somewhere. These are all telling us that there was water really flowing across the surface there, and probably pretty deep water ? ankle-deep, knee-deep water ? like you'd have in an occasional desert flood on the Earth, in the Southwest, for example."

Other researchers agree that this is convincing evidence of flowing water. Peter Doran, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, says the rounded grains in that rock are big enough that they couldn't have been carried and smoothed by the wind.

"Before, we never really saw a rock on Mars where we could tell whether it was wind or water that was doing the transport," Doran says. "And now we have a clear sign of flowing water on Mars and we can get estimates of the size of the flow and so on. It's really fascinating."

Other Mars rovers have seen some evidence of water, but nothing like this. Andrew Knoll, a planetary sciences professor at Harvard University, says earlier rovers saw things that could be associated with groundwater that might occasionally bubble up -? not the kind of flowing surface water that made these newly discovered rocks.

"Something happened on Mars that simply doesn't happen today," Knoll says. "And that is, there was water flowing at high rates over the Martian surface. That's really what they've found."

Water is important, of course, because it's needed for life. And Curiosity's main mission is to search for evidence that Mars was once capable of supporting life. Its mission is expected to last about two years.

Daily Kos: 10 Reasons Not to See "Won't Back Down"

The Walden Media film Won't Back Down, starring Maggie Gyllenhall and Viola Davis, opens in theaters today. The film dramatizes a parent fighting to improve her child's school, but it's actually a dishonest Hollywood portrayal of the problems in our educational system - funded by the very people who want to privatize and profit from our schools. Here are ten reasons to skip it:

Won?t Back Down is ?inept and bizarre.? Andrew O?Hehir, reviewing for Salon.com, writes that Won?t Back Down is ?a set of right-wing anti-union talking points disguised (with limited success) as a mainstream motion-picture-type product.?

Won?t Back Down promotes an ALEC model bill. The film promotes the ?parent trigger? law, an ALEC-created policy proposal that turns public schools into privately-run charter schools. ALEC also brought you Arizona?s draconian immigration law, Pennsylvania?s disenfranchising voter ID law, and Wisconsin?s union-busting Act 10.

Won?t Back Down is deeply deceptive. The ?parent trigger? law promoted by the film has only been used twice in real life. Both instances have created ?legal and community disasters,? writes Salon.com?s Alexander Zaitchik

Won?t Back Down promotes horrible (and untrue) stereotypes about teachers. The film shows public school teachers as listless and uncaring. One teacher is even shown locking a girl in a closet. As Randi Weingarten writes in the Washington Post:

I don?t recognize the teachers portrayed in this movie?The teachers I know are women and men who have devoted their lives to helping children learn and grow and reach their full potential. These women and men come in early, stay late to mentor and tutor students, coach sports teams, advise the student council, work through lunch breaks, purchase school supplies using money from their own pockets, and spend their evenings planning lessons, grading papers and talking to parents.

Won?t Back Down helps fund anti-union causes. Walden Media, which produced the film, is owned by Phil Anschutz, whose foundation has donated $210,000 to the anti-union National Right to Work Legal Defense Fund.

Won?t Back Down avoids the real issues. Writing in variety, Peter DeBruge points out the film is ?grossly oversimplifying? education reform.? Rather, it?s a ?disingenuous pot-stirrer [that] plays to audiences? emotions rather than their intelligence.?

Won?t Back Down is a ?heavy handed lecture disguised as art.? Elizabeth Weitzman, reviewing for the New York Daily News, begins ?I am neither anti-charter schools nor anti-union.? In the film, however, ?the plot is just a clothesline on which to hang an unabashedly biased diatribe?.Every so often they remember they?re writing a movie and not attending a debate, so they?ll shove in a rushed romance, or an out of nowhere personal revelation.?

Won?t Back Down is being heavily promoted by the right-wing. Groups promoting the film include the Heritage Foundation, Freedom Works, and the Chamber of Commerce, who are also lending support to right-wing candidates.

Won?t Back Down scapegoats teachers and their unions, but ignores all other factors. As Liza Featherstone writes in Dissent:

Jamie [the film?s protagonist] leads the fictional takeover because her daughter, who is dyslexic, can?t read. Yet not a word is said in the movie about the need for more services and teachers for special needs kids?
Never mind those wonky details. The problem, we?re repeatedly led to believe, is the teachers? union. But if unions were to blame for failing schools, wouldn?t unionized public schools in Princeton or Scarsdale also suck?

Hollywood hasn?t been known to let logic get in the way of a good story, and neither do education reformers.

Finally: Won?t Back Down isn?t your best option. Going to the movies this weekend? Try the musical comedy Pitch Perfect, the sci-fi thriller Looper, or, of course, this classic re-release about a brave teacher (well, archaeology professor).

BEIJING (AP) ? China's communist leadership expelled Bo Xilai from the ruling party Friday and sought to bury him with charges ranging from corruption to sexual affairs, aiming to sweep away their most damaging scandal in decades while finally scheduling their long-awaited leadership transition for November.

A statement from the party's Politburo amounted to a surprisingly strong and wide-ranging indictment against Bo, effectively ending the public of life of the flamboyant 63-year-old populist who was one of China's best known politicians and whose ambition was considered a menace to the country's top leaders.

The former Politburo member and regional party chief is to be charged with crimes dating back more than a decade, including abuse of power, bribe taking and improper relations with several women ? banned by the party because they are considered an inducement to corruption. He also is accused of involvement in the cover-up of his wife's murder of a British businessman, which was instrumental in triggering his downfall.

"They want to drive a stake through the heart of his political career, and make it absolutely impossible, not only for him to reappear but for anyone else who has that idea of trying to create that sort of personalized, political, charismatic leadership in some part of China which may challenge the leadership," Rana Mitter, professor of Chinese history and politics at Oxford University.

The Politburo also announced the party congress would take place Nov. 8.

Dates for the congress, held once every five years, were overdue and highly anticipated because it will see President Hu Jintao step down after 10 years as party boss ? and China's ultimate leader ? to be replaced by Vice President Xi Jinping.

The congress had been expected to take place in mid-October, although the preparations were overshadowed by the Bo scandal.

"Bo Xilai's behavior resulted in serious repercussions and enormous damage to the reputation of the party and the nation, producing extremely vile effects domestically and overseas, and causing heavy damage to the cause of the party and the people," the Politburo said in a statement issued following its meeting in Beijing.

Speculation swirled for months over whether the party would harshly punish one of its own for criminal wrongdoing, or merely allow its own disciplinary arm to deal him a slap on the wrist.

The scandal was set off when a trusted Bo aide disclosed that his boss's wife had murdered a British businessman. Bo was sacked as party chief of the city of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

The trials of Wang, which wrapped up this week, and Gu, which finished earlier, cleared the way for the party to decide whether to charge Bo with criminal wrongdoing. But his ouster from the leadership early this year opened a window into the divisive jostling for power as president and party leader Hu prepares to retire to make way for younger leaders.

Bo is the first Politburo member to be purged and handed to prosecutors since Hu had Shanghai party secretary Chen Liangyu sentenced for corruption in 2007. In that case, more than a year passed before Chen stood trial, perhaps auguring a long wait before Bo's case goes to court.

High-level purges, however, are almost always more about political power plays than crimes.

Bo was a divisive figure among Chinese leaders. Self-assured and comfortable with the media, he promoted populist policies as party chief of Chongqing and rode high-profile campaigns to bust organized crime gangs and promote communist culture to national popularity. His ambition was seen as a threat not only by Hu but to Hu's soon-to-be-installed successor, Xi Jinping.

Bo's supporters called the Politburo decision a political tactic. "I have doubts on any criminal wrongdoings of Bo Xilai. I need to see the evidence," said Han Deqiang, an economics professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a leading voice in what Chinese call the new left. "I think this is a political battle turned into a criminal one."

Bo's detractors, however, were cheered by the news, though they too saw politics at play in the decision.

"This announcement is long overdue. This means there is some progress in the rule of law in China. There is more transparency," said Li Zhuang, a formidable defense lawyer who found himself jailed in Chongqing after he accused police of extracting his client's confession by torture. "Of course it is also political. In China, politics and law often go hand in hand."

The decision by the 25-member Politburo, of which Bo had been a member, said that "investigations show that Bo had seriously violated party discipline ... abused his power, committed grave mistakes and should be held responsible for the Wang Lijun case as well as Gu's murder case."

The mention of Gu's case appeared to be a reference to obstruction of justice. Wang testified that Bo ignored him when he told him of his suspicions, then boxed him in the ears, demoted him, and detained several of his subordinates.

It was the first direct mention of Bo in state media in months. His name was not mentioned for both Gu's and Wang's trials.

The Politburo statement said that he took huge amounts of bribes directly or through his family and "maintained illicit relationships with numerous females." It said Bo's crimes dated from his time as mayor of the eastern port city of Dalian, through his term as commerce minister and as leader of Chongqing.

Bo's removal is seen as strengthening Xi's position, leaving him the undisputed leader of the party's "princelings," as the offspring of high-ranking communist elders are known.

"Now Bo is finished, Xi can take over those supporters from Bo and enlarge his network among the princelings," said China politics analyst Willy Lam of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Yet his ouster will do nothing to win over Bo supporters among party hardliners and admirers of Bo, who was widely popular among working-class Chinese.

"Xi is safer with Bo gone, but the hardliners will withhold their cooperation at the congress as a sign of their disapproval," said China expert Feng Chongyi of the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.

Friday's Politburo meeting sets a series of events in motion. The 204-member Central Committee, a cross-section of the national party elite, usually convenes about a week before the congress to approve decisions already made by the Politburo. Privately, the committee will also approve the incoming leaders and a policy blueprint for the next five years.

Hummingbirds make flying backward look easy

Backing up usually isn't easy, yet when Nir Sapir observed agile hummingbirds visiting a feeder on his balcony in Berkeley, California, he was struck by their ability to reverse. 'I saw that they quite often fly backwards', he recalls, adding that they always reverse out of a bloom after feasting. However, when he searched the literature he was disappointed to find that there were hardly any studies of this particular behaviour. 'This was a bit surprising given that they are doing this all the time', Sapir says, explaining that the tiny aviators visit flowers to feed once every 2 min. 'I thought that this was an interesting topic to learn how they are doing it and what the consequences are for their metabolism', Sapir says, so he and his postdoc advisor, Robert Dudley, set about measuring the flight movements and metabolism of reversing hummingbirds and they publish their discovery that reversing is much cheaper than hovering flight and no more costly than forward flight for hummingbirds in The Journal of Experimental Biology at http://jeb.biologists.org.

Capturing five Anna's hummingbirds at a feeder located just inside a University of California Berkeley laboratory window, Sapir trained the birds to fly in a wind tunnel by tricking the birds into feeding from a syringe of sucrose disguised as a flower. He then filmed each bird as it hovered to feed before returning to the perch when satisfied. Knowing that the bird would return to the feeder again soon, Sapir turned on the air flow when the hummingbird arrived, directing the 3 m s flow so that the bird had to fly backwards against the wind to remain stationary at the 'flower'. Then he repeated the experiment with the syringe feeder rotated through 180 deg while the hummingbird flew forward into the wind to stay in place.

Analysing the three flight styles, Sapir recalls that there were clear differences between forward and backward flight. The hummingbirds' body posture became much more upright as they flew backward, forcing them to bend their heads more to insert their beaks into the simulated flower. In addition, the reversing birds reduced the inclination of the plane of the wing beat so that it became more horizontal. And when Sapir analysed the wing beat frequency, he found that the birds were beating their wings at 43.8 Hz, instead of the 39.7 Hz that they use while flying forward. 'That is quite a lot for hummingbirds because they hardly change their wing beat frequency', explains Sapir.

Repeating the experiments while recording the birds' oxygen consumption rates, Sapir says, 'We expected that we would find high or intermediate values for metabolism during backward flight because the bird has an upright body position and this means that they have a higher drag. Also, the birds use backward flight frequently, but not all the time, so we assumed that it would not be more efficient in terms of the flight mechanics compared with forward flight.' However, Sapir was surprised to discover that instead of being more costly, backward flight was as cheap as forward flight and 20% more efficient than hovering. And when Sapir gently increased the wind flow from 0 m s in 1.5 m s steps for a single bird, he found that flight was cheapest at speeds of 3 m s? and above, although the bird was unable to fly backwards faster than 4.5 m s.

Describing hummingbirds as insects trapped in a bird's body, Sapir adds that the fluttering flight of hummingbirds has more in common with insects than with their feathered cousins and he is keen to find out whether other hovering animals such as small songbirds and nectar-feeding bats can reverse too.

Cut Your Workers Compensation Costs

Your workers? comp premiums are probably your single largest expense after direct payroll. But many savvy small business owners are writing smaller checks for their workers? comp premiums. They?ve adopted moneysaving strategies to actively manage their workers? comp insurance ? the state-mandated program that pays medical and other expenses for workplace injuries and provides employers liability coverage for lawsuits filed for job-related accidents. Here?s how you can reduce your workers? comp premiums, lower your exposure to accidents and injuries and keep your workers safe:

1. Classify your employees correctly.
Job classifications are determined by independent rating bureaus or by state-run classification systems. An employees? job is assigned a particular rating and matching premium based on the job?s estimated level of risk. Since insurance companies typically assign a business a single classification, you could be paying more than you should. For example, if you run a roofing company with three roofers and two office workers, and all your employees are classified as roofers, you are being overcharged. Contact your insurance company and request that each employee be reclassified according to the specific tasks each performs. Reclassifying your employees could mean a big difference in your premium rates.

2. Establish a safety program.
Contact your local OSHA office for safety guidelines, and discuss them with employees. Give workers a list of do?s and don?ts about safety practices.

3. Create an employee safety committee.
Appoint one or two employees to work with you to audit your business. Check to ensure equipment is in good condition and work areas are clean and safe and meet OSHA requirements. At Jack M. Otto Electric Company in Memphis, Tenn., co-owner Cindy Otto and one employee work as a safety committee to ensure the company?s 65 employees maintain their equipment in good condition and keep work areas free of debris and spills. The duo conducts safety inspections of each employee?s work van, checking for cracked windshields and worn-out brakes.

4. Give monetary rewards.
When you save money on your workers? comp premiums, share it with your employees. Give a cash bonus during months no injuries are reported. Or start a safety bingo or other game: During months that no injuries are reported, put every employee?s name into the hat for a $100 or more drawing. The game will not only lower your reported injuries but also create a group consciousness about work safety.

5. Handle claims promptly.
Employees often feel abandoned, fearful and angry when they?re left on their own to see the doctor, pay out-of-pocket expenses and wonder what their rights are. Instead of asking you, they could contact a lawyer and start the claims process. Prevent that chain of events by taking immediate action when an employee is hurt on the job. Personally escort the injured worker to the doctor. Explain what type of work the employee does, and find out what accommodations you can make to return the employee to work, even if it means filing papers or answering the phone. Consider personally paying your employee?s out-of-pocket medical expenses and letting the insurance company reimburse you.

6. Offer alternative work options.
If an employee has injured his back lifting boxes, have him sort mail or answer the phone. If an employee is not bedridden but must stay home, let her work on projects using a home computer, phone and e-mail.

7. Be supportive.
Take a positive and sincere interest in your employee?s recovery. Call regularly. Show workers that they are needed and respected, and they?ll want to come back to work.

Boy, 12, gets first kiss ? from Carrie Underwood

Every 12-year-old boy should take notes on this video from a Carrie Underwood concert in Louisville, Ky., in which a young man scores his very first kiss from the country music star.

Chase, the boy who probably hasn't washed his mouth since this happened,?made a sign asking Underwood, "Will you be my first kiss?" The singer spotted the sign and asked the boy to come up on stage. The whole thing was caught on camera and posted on YouTube.

Underwood asks Chase how old he is and admits that she didn't have her first kiss until she was 14.?She then tells the boy that her husband is somewhere in the building. "He might be looking for ya later," she says.

"How we gonna do this?" Underwood asks Chase, and in the best answer ever for a pre-teen that didn't involve Batman or pizza, he says, "Lip to lip." Underwood and the crowd laugh with appreciation. "This is the smartest kid EVER!"

The singer then instructs the boy to close his eyes and plants a lasting memory on his lips.

"The only time that's gonna happen," Underwood warns the cheering crowd.?So, grown men everywhere, stop looking for Sharpies and?posterboard.

What is Credit Counseling and How Does It Work?

When you are struggling with debt, you may hear about many different types of debt relief, and each one may sound promising. But how do you know which ones are legitimate and which ones you should avoid? Those are the most important questions. And to help you answer those questions, we?ve created some comprehensive resources on credit card debt, student loan debt, and debt consolidation. One type of debt relief we haven?t discussed in detail is credit counseling. So what is credit counseling and how does it work?

How Does Credit Counseling Work?

Credit counselors look at your total financial situation, and help you work out a plan to pay off your debt. Reputable credit counselors can help you create a money management plan, and a debt pay down plan, as well as provide free resources and workshops related to money management.

Credit counseling can be a very positive experience as long as you find a trustworthy credit counselor and commit yourself to the process. You need to be up front about your situation, including what you owe and where you owe it. You also need to be forthcoming about your current expenses, and your income. A credit counselor can only help you if you are honest about your situation, and willing to get help.

The Federal Trade Commission has an excellent web page?dedicated to?helping you choose a reputable credit counselor if you should need one.

Credit Counselors and Debt Management Plans

In some cases, a credit counselor may recommend someone start a debt management plan. But while the terms ?credit counseling? and ?debt management? are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not in fact the same thing. Credit counseling refers to the counseling session aimed at improving ones knowledge of and behaviors related to their finances, while a debt management plan usually means entrusting your finances to a company that you make monthly payments to and that in turn passes those along to your creditors.

While there are some benefits to a debt management plan, it?s important to know that it costs you money and that it requires you to give up some control over your debt payments. Usually, it means that you must stop paying your creditors; instead, you make one monthly payment to the debt management company or credit counseling agency, and they disburse your payment to your creditors.?The debt management company can also contact your creditors to negotiate lower interest rates. But keep in mind that you can do this yourself ? all it takes is ?some preparation and willingness to make the phone calls!

Realize that these types of plans usually cost money. You might be charged a monthly fee, and/or initiation fees, to participate. Reputable credit counseling agencies disclose all of the fees up front, and do so before they ask for sensitive personal information from you. So always make sure to ask about fees before enrolling in a debt management plan. And don?t enroll in one unless you?ve first considered the other options available to you.

Does Credit Counseling Hurt Your Credit Score?

When you speak with a credit counselor, and consult about your situation, it doesn?t affect your credit score. Simply meeting with a counselor, and working out a debt repayment plan, won?t impact your score.

However, you should be aware that actions you take as a result of the counseling can affect your score. And doing a debt management plan can definitely have a negative impact on you score, at least in the short run. In many cases, a debt management plan involves closing your credit accounts as you pay each one off. That can hurt your score, but it may be necessary if you?ve had problems with excessive spending and need to remove the temptation of having available credit. Additionally, if you enroll in a debt management plan and the company or agency stops paying your bill (as a negotiation tactic), your credit score will be damaged. Partial payments and particularly debt settlements can weigh on your credit score quite a bit.

Before you begin, ask your credit counselor about the process, and what actions might affect your credit score before you agree to anything.

Should You Sign Up for Credit Counseling?

Whether or not you should sign up for credit counseling depends largely on your situation. Credit counseling might help you if:

You feel overwhelmed by the amount of debt you have, and want a face-to-face relationship with someone who can give you a better financial understanding.
You?re unsure of how to approach your creditors about a settlement, or a payment plan and would like help with that process.

Credit counseling isn?t for everyone, so carefully consider your options before you make a decision.

How To Find a Legitimate Credit Counselor

Unfortunately, there are plenty of unscrupulous folks out there, ready to take advantage of someone in desperate circumstances. You have to be on the look out for disreputable credit counselors that ask for money up front without providing free resources, hide their fees, and tout their services as alternatives to bankruptcy. Be wary of those who claim that they have access to ?secret? techniques that you can?t accomplish on your own.

Instead, check with the Better Business Bureau, as well as your state?s consumer protection agency, before agreeing to work with a credit counselor. You can also check with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, as well as view a list of approved credit counselors from the United States Trustee Program.
