Quantum teleportation leaps forward

Two teams improve long-distance transmission of information about particles

Quantum information has leapt through the air about 100 kilometers or more in two new experiments, farther and with greater fidelity than ever before. The research brings truly long-distance quantum communication networks, in which satellites could beam encrypted information around the globe, closer to reality.

Both studies involve quantum teleportation, which transports the quantum state of one particle onto another. This Star Trek?like feat is possible because of a phenomenon called entanglement, in which pairs of particles become linked in such a way that measuring a certain property of one instantly determines the same property for the other, even if separated by large distances.

In teleportation, two people ? physicists call them Alice and Bob ? share one each of a pair of entangled particles. Alice measures a property on her particle and sends Bob a note, through regular channels, about what she did. Bob then knows how to alter his own particle to match Alice?s. Bob?s particle then possesses the information that had been contained in Alice?s, which was obliterated by her measurement. Thus the information has been ?teleported? from Alice?s lab to Bob?s.

Physicists first teleported quantum information in 1997 using a single pair of entangled photons, or particles of light. Since then researchers have slowly upped the ante, teleporting with larger groups of photons, over longer distances and sometimes using atoms as the entangled particles.

In 2007 Anton Zeilinger of the University of Vienna and his colleagues set a distance record by using a pair of entangled photons to transmit a piece of quantum information over 143 kilometers, between two of the Canary Islands. In new work, posted online May 17 at arXiv.org, the team reports a cleaner and more robust version of the same experiment using multiple entangled photons.

This time around, the scientists added a phase shift into the laser beams that made the final measurement cleaner and easier to pick out from background signals. The technique, called ?active feed-forward,? is ?an essential ingredient in future applications such as communication between quantum computers,? Zeilinger and his colleagues wrote. Team members declined interviews because the paper is not yet published.

?Our experiment confirms the maturity and applicability of the involved technologies in real-world scenarios, and is a milestone towards future satellite-based quantum teleportation,? they wrote.

In the second experiment, Chinese researchers entangled many photons together and teleported information 97 kilometers across a lake in China. That?s two orders of magnitude farther than any other multiphoton teleportation experiment, say Jian-Wei Pan of the University of Science and Technology of China in Shanghai and his colleagues. The work appeared online May 9 on arXiv.org.

Pan?s team also developed a way to track moving teleportation signals more accurately, which again could help make the final result more robust. ?Our results show that even with high-loss ground to satellite uplink channels, quantum teleportation can be realized,? the scientists wrote.

Both Zeilinger and Pan next want to teleport information to a satellite in low-earth orbit. That distance is about three times that already accomplished in the Canary Islands, but because there are fewer air molecules to interfere with the signals at higher altitudes it may be easier to do.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4023

From a casual glance at its features, or even the results on our tests, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4023 ($299.99 list) doesn't seem all that different from the much less expensive Editors' Choice Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4020 ($149.99 direct, 4.5 stars). Both are aimed at micro and small office, both offer WiFi and Ethernet, both have similar speed and output quality, and at the base price for each, both offer essentially the same paper handling. But although the differences are relatively subtle, they're enough to justify the higher price for those who need them.

If you think of the WP-4023 as a beefed up version of the Epson WP-4020, you won't be far off. For paper handling, for example, both include a duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page), a 250-sheet tray, and an 80-sheet tray, for a total 330-sheet input capacity. However, only the WP-4023 lets you add an optional 250 sheet tray for a total of 830 sheets.

Similarly, both can use the same ink cartridges. But only the WP-4023 can also use higher capacity cartridges, with a higher yield per cartridge?at 3,400 pages each, rather than 2,400 for black and 1200 for each color?and a slightly lower cost per page.

The potential savings per page isn't much. The difference is for color pages only, and it's just 0.4 cents per page, so you'd have to print 37,500 color pages to make up the difference in initial cost between the two printers. The real advantage of the higher capacity cartridges in this case is the convenience of not having to change cartridges as often. However, that convenience, along with the potentially higher input capacity, makes the WP-4023 a better choice for heavier duty printing.

The Basics, Setup, and Speed
Like most of Epson's WorkForce printers the WP-4023 offers support for Epson Connect Email Print and Google Cloud Print for printing through the cloud, as well as support for Apple AirPrint for printing over a WiFi connection. As with other WorkForce printers also, the WP-4023 doesn?t come with setup instructions for Google Cloud Print or AirPrint, so you have to find them on Epson's Web site.

The WP-4023 is large for an inkjet, at 11.2 by 18.1 by 16.5 inches (HWD), but assuming you have room for it, set up I standard fare. For my tests, I connected it to a wired network and printed from a Windows Vista system.

The printer's speed counts as a strong point. I timed the WP-4023 on our business applications suite at an effective 6 pages per minute (ppm). That makes it essentially tied with both the Epson WP-4020 and the Editors' Choice HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter ($149.99 direct, 4.5 stars), with all three printers well into laser territory for speed. They're also much faster than the vast majority of inkjets at anything like the price. The speed for photos wasn't as impressive, but still counts as reasonably fast, averaging 1 minute 12 seconds for a 4-by-6.

Output Quality
Output quality for the WP-4033 is typical for an inkjet overall, with slightly lower quality text than most, but slightly higher quality photos. Text quality is at the low end of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjets fall, which makes it good enough for most business purposes, unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics is dead on par for an inkjet, making it suitable for any business need, including PowerPoint handouts, for example. Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you may also consider it good enough for output going to an important client or customer when you need to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photo quality is at the upper end of the tight range were virtually all inkjets fall. By definition, that makes it better than you'd get with some drugstore prints and far better than you'll get from a color laser. This counts as overkill for most offices, but it can be a useful extra for real estate offices and other businesses, that need to print photos.

If your print needs aren't heavy duty enough to make you long for the convenience of the WP-4023's high-capacity cartridges, its optional paper tray, or both, count the printer as an unnecessary luxury. You'll be better off spending half as much on the Epson WP-4020 or the HP Officejet Pro 8100. On the other hand, if you print enough so those features sound more like necessities you can't do without, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4023 is clearly the better choice. More important, its balance of speed, output quality, paper handling, and support for features like Email Print and AirPrint make it easy to recommend.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Texas (AP) ? A man dangled from the cab of a construction crane before falling 150 feet to his death at a college campus in Dallas early Tuesday, ending a more than 14-hour standoff, police said.

Police have yet to identify the man who spent a sweltering afternoon on the crane at the Southern Methodist University campus at University Park, fully exposed to the blazing sun with temperatures in the low 90s. The man warned officers that he was armed and would shoot anyone who approached him.

Two SWAT team members who climbed the crane around 1 a.m. Tuesday discovered the man had barricaded himself into the cab of the crane and covered the surrounding area with grease to prevent them from reaching him, Dallas Police Department said in a statement. The man then sprayed a grease "similar to WD-40" toward the officers, police said.

The man, who climbed the crane around noon Monday, pulled himself out of the cab and briefly hung from the crane ? clinging on with just his hands ? before dropping to his death at 1:47 a.m. Tuesday.

"The suspect is deceased," Sr. Cpl. Melinda Gutierrez said. Police did not say if any weapon had been recovered.

Police are investigating if the man was involved in an earlier robbery, the police statement said.

The University campus was closed for Memorial Day, but reopened Tuesday.

Five simple diet and exercise changes can bring quick results

As the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day weekend is yet another reminder to stick with your balanced diet and exercise regime. For some, however, it may evoke feelings of sheer panic as the unofficial start of swimsuit season.

To give you a jumpstart, here are five solid fitness strategies to incorporate now, along with a sample day?s eating plan. And while we can?t guarantee overnight weight loss, making these changes can immediately help you feel less bloated with fewer energy dips, and may result in a (slightly) flatter belly.

Slash the white stuff: This includes the obvious, like white breads, pastas and rice, as well as sweets and sugary drinks (including fruit juice, sweet tea and many smoothies and specialty coffee drinks). It also includes those perceived-as-healthy foods like restaurant-style wraps and deli bagels. While they may seem diet-friendly, many can pack in the carb-equivalent of six slices of bread.

Blast excess bloat: Not only are the above-mentioned sugars and white carbs typically calorie-dense foods that won?t keep you full for long, these carb-rich foods and drinks can also cause you to retain fluid.

Cutting back, an obvious way to avoiding bloat, gives us just one more reason to adhere to the USDA?s recommended upper limit of 1,500 to 2,300 milligrams of sodium daily. Keep in mind that limiting high-salt foods requires more than simply putting down the salt shaker. It also means nixing most fast food and canned goods, and checking the labels on ?diet? foods such as reduced-fat salad dressings and low-calorie frozen dinners, since many can be packed with hundreds of milligrams of sodium.

Try to incorporate natural diuretics when possible, such as apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, parsley and fennel. They won?t negate the effects of indulging in a high-salt diet, but every little bit helps.

Prevent muscle loss: Not only does muscle mass help to give a lean, toned appearance, it also increases the number of calories we burn. Maximize muscle maintenance and growth by incorporating a protein-rich meal or snack every three to four hours throughout the day, emphasizing lean proteins such as seafood, skinless poultry, extra-lean ground beef and pork tenderloin, as well as nonmeat options such as plain low-fat Greek yogurt and veggie burgers.

Move it: The immediate benefits of exercise are three-fold: You burn more calories, shed excess water via sweat you get a boost to mood (potentially helping to fend off cravings). China will invest over CNY370 billion ($58.5 billion) in its telecommunication sector this year, up over 10% from last year, state radio reported Friday, citing an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Sugar fight takes another bitter turn

NEW YORK (AP) ? What defines sugar? It's getting to be a stickier question.

The Sugar Association is accusing the makers of high fructose corn syrup of trying to candy-coat their image by calling their product a "sugar." The Corn Refiners Association is firing back by calling the accusations another attempt to censor its efforts to explain to the public that high fructose corn syrup is, well, a form of sugar.

The latest twist in the spat came after a recent medical study prompted headlines such as "Sugar can make you dumb." The Sugar Association issued a release this week noting the substance used in the study was actually fructose, not its sugar. The group blamed a "multimillion-dollar advertising campaign" by the Corn Refiners Association for generating the confusion.

Audrae Erickson, president of Corn Refiners Association, says the Sugar Association's press release this week "seems to be an effort to silence the campaign" to educate consumers.

The two sides have been at odds for some time now.

Given the negative image of high fructose corn syrup in recent years, the Corn Refiners Association in 2010 submitted an application to the federal government to have the sweetening agent renamed "corn sugar" on nutrition labels. That decision is still pending.

The group has also been running a marketing campaign to explain that its syrup is actually a form of sugar and has the same nutritional value as the white, granular table sugar consumers are familiar with.

That prompted a lawsuit from the Sugar Association last year claiming the campaign was misleading. An attorney for the group, John Burlingame, says it's not trying to stifle free speech with its lawsuit or latest statement. It just wants to point out that high fructose corn syrup is chemically distinct and derived from a different source than sugar.

High fructose corn syrup came into the U.S. market in the late 1970s and 1980s. The product is used widely in cereals, sodas and other processed food and drinks because it's cheaper and mixes easily into recipes. Despite the name, the Corn Refiners Association says the most common forms of it are about half fructose and half glucose.

The American Medical Association has said there's not enough evidence to restrict the use of high fructose corn syrup, although it wants more research. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has said that there was no evidence that the sweetener is any worse for the body than sugar ? and that Americans eat too much of both of them.

Dogs often bite for one common reason: They are uncomfortable or fearful about a situation that a human has put them in, and the human is not reading the dog's behavior correctly. The dog then reacts.

A frequent conversation that I have with someone who contacts me for the first time to care for their pet involves a lot of dialogue about their dog's behavior, and the better part of it is on the caller's part.

"My dog has been labeled as aggressive toward members of the staff and has been asked not to come back to doggie daycare, but they are fine at home," or, "My pet is uneasy and becomes unmanageable on walks, or around new people or groups of people," are familiar statements.

Some of these pets have snapped at people or even worse ? bitten them.

Can you relate?

The truth is, many of my clients have ended up calling on me because they need a caregiver while they are away or a dog walker through the week, and I'm a last resort, of sorts.

Other arrangements have not worked out well because the pooch, regardless of the size or breed, has been deemed 'dominant', and the owners believe they behave that way for various reasons ? one that I detest is that the dog doesn't respect the fact that their human is the 'pack leader.'

When I say to a potential client, "I understand, and it's common, but let's talk more about that so we can understand why it might be happening, first. Surely there is a reasonable explanation for the behavior..." they tend to relax a bit after a bit of open and honest discussion about what behaviors that their furry friend is exhibiting, revealing a picture about the pet that they didn't expect.

In most of the cases, the dog's behavior is misunderstood: It just boils down to the fact that some pets haven't had proper socialization early in life, they haven't attained the skills they need to navigate through these type of encounters (with both other pets and humans) and some are actually quite fearful.

The sad reality is that misunderstanding these concepts or writing a dog off as merely 'aggressive' and leaving it at that can lead to situations where things escalate to a point when a dog bites someone ? and that's never a good thing.

May 20-27 is Dog Bite Prevention Week, and to highlight that, it only seems fitting to talk about a totally preventable problem that has grown significantly in recent years. One estimate is that 4.7 million dog bites occur each year, and in 1 million of those cases, medical attention is sought.

In a piece by Melissa Bain, DVM, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist and chief of the Behavior Service at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, she offers some interesting insight into some facts about dog bites that you might find surprising.

• According to one study, half of children between 4 and 18 years old reported having been bitten by a dog.


• The vast majority of victims were bitten by a dog that they knew, not a stray dog roaming the streets, contrary to popular belief.


• Children and seniors are most likely to be bitten.

These statistic speak to me clearly, and illustrate some of my previous points on why most dog bites occur. These situations are preventable, and it comes down to humans (both kids and adults) understanding what facilitates them and how to best deal with a dog who bites.

In a great piece by Sophia Yin, DVM, MS, she offers some sage insight when it comes to dogs who bite.

One point that stands out is that, quite often, a dog is conveying to the human that he is uncomfortable, but said human is not understanding the message. It's up to us to learn the cues that dogs exhibit by way of body language.

This is especially important for kids, since they are those who fall in the demographic of those who are often?bitten. So, what factors create these dog bite?cases?

Many times, children have not learned how to approach a dog correctly and they don't know how to 'read' what a dog is saying when they communicate that they are not comfortable being approached. Other scenarios include a child approaching a sleeping pet ? surprising them ? or not understanding how to greet dogs. On the other hand, many dogs who bite are fearful. Time and time again, we see in that fearful dogs haven't had proper socialization early in life, and they haven't attained the skills they need to navigate through encounters that they find challenging.

Yin explains this concept in her most recent blog post.

Generally fearful dogs start off by trying to stay away from the things that scare them. But as they are confronted with scary situations repeatedly, they can learn that offense (barking, snapping, biting) is their best defense because it makes the scary people go away.

Fortunately, there are ways to help dogs learn how to navigate through encounters with humans that they find challenging, by way of desensitization and classical counterconditioning (DS/CC). And with some diligence, finesse and patience on the human's part, their dog can behave more confidently when it comes to being social, regardless of the situation.

Yin gives more detail on this and other concepts, such as how canines can be taught to carry out proper replacement behaviors that are disparate with the fearful behavior they have become so familiar with exhibiting, in her blog post, 'Help, My Dog Bites! How to Deal with Dogs Who Bite'.

I can't deny that some dog bites happen when one encounters an unfamiliar dog who is fearful or aggressive, and Bain details some must-have tips for what to do in a situation like this in her piece, 'Any Dog Can Bite: Strategies to Protect Your Family'.

In reality, all dog bite situations happen because of an oversight on the part of a human. With diligence, proper education and understanding of canine socialization, behavior and body language ? and precautions to ensure that dogs are not placed in a situation where they will react by biting ??we can keep it from happening.

Fat Joe has one heck of a poker face. Back in April, after studio pictures of Joe Crack, Kanye West, Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes and DJ Khaled made their way onto Twitter, the Bronx rapper played coy when MTV News asked him about the photos.

"Hip-hop moments, that's it. It was just a back-in-the-days hip-hop moment," Joe Crack told MTV News about the all-star studio session one week after the pictures leaked. "For, like, a whole week, we've just been vibing, everybody's been vibing with each other, and it's a beautiful thing."

Joey told MTV News that he, Yeezy and the gang were "discussing hip-hop politics," but they were clearly up to so much more. On Wednesday night, the Terror Squad leader hit iTunes with "Pride N Joy," a breezy love ode featuring Kanye, Miguel, Jadakiss, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey), DJ Khaled, Roscoe Dash and Busta Rhymes.

Only Yeezy and Joe actually rap on the track, trading rhymes back and forth for a few bars. "Birkin bags made of python, she's a beautiful nightmare," Joe raps before 'Ye chimes in spitting, "Turn the lights on." Interestingly, Joe recruited capable MCs Miguel and Roscoe Dash not to rap on the track, but rather to harmonize on the song's hook.

Cook Coke Crack continues to serenade the object of affection, lyrically showering her with expensive presents like Christian Louboutin shoes and courtside Knicks tickets. On the song's bridge, Jadakiss, Mos Def, Khaled and Bus support Joey's lavish gift-giving when they sing, "And even if she all 'bout the money I don't really care/ I got a lot of money there's enough of it that we can share."

"Pride N Joy" carries a sort of 1990s Native Tongues vibe popularized by groups like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. In that case, maybe Joe's original description of the studio session wasn't too far off after all; maybe it was just "a back-in-the-days hip-hop moment."

Want to fly next to your child? Prepare to pay

Summer travel will become more costly this year now that airlines are charging more for aisle and window seats, in some cases $25 each way. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

It?s not just enough to buy your airplane ticket anymore: Increasingly, along with checking baggage, airlines want you to pay extra to ensure a seat next to your travel companions, including your spouse or child.

That?s sure to lead to unhappiness during the coming busy summer travel season, with passengers already toting their own suitcases and carrying their own food to avoid paying additional fees. In many cases, it may cost as much as $25 ? each way ??to ensure you and your companion sit together. And last month, United Airlines ended its policy of allowing families traveling with small children to board early, USA Today reports.?

It?s tough news for many summer travelers. Airlines have?successfully raised airfares?three times this year.?Business travelers are already facing fares that will likely rise this year an average of four percent in North America, according to the Egencia's 2012 Global Corporate Travel Forecast. Egencia is an Expedia, Inc. company.

Regarding the seat reservation fees, it works like this: Airlines are reserving a growing number of window and aisle seats for passengers willing to pay extra for them,?the Associated Press reports. While airlines say it's a move to?boost revenue, the policy is making it harder for friends and family members who don't pay this fee to sit next to each other. At the peak of the summer travel season, it might be nearly impossible, the AP reports.

Since last summer, American, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and United Airlines have increased the percentage of coach seats requiring some kind of extra fee. Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines charge extra for any advanced seat assignment, according to the AP.

?I think it?s going to fall flat on its face,? predicted travel psychologist Michael Brein, PhD, of Bainbridge Island, Wash. ?It?s pushing the envelope a little far for travelers. People have had it up to here with fees, and this one sounds not so well thought out to me.?

George Hobica, founder and president of the Internet travel site Airfarewatchdog, said he thinks the fees are reasonable. ?When you think about it, when you go to a theater, a Broadway play, you always pay extra for better seats. They?re doing the same thing.?

Airlines are having a tough time, Hobica points out:? ?Two of our remaining airlines lost money last quarter, and the industry as a whole had a 1.5 percent profit margin. I?m all about low airfares ? it?s been my stock in trade for almost 20 years. But the traveling public has had it good at expense of the airlines? People need to be honest and should buck up and say if they want these low fares, then the people who want special service should pay (extra) for it.?

One airline bucking the trend is the Seattle-based Alaska.

?We do not charge for priority seating, or seating together at Alaska Airlines,? said spokeswoman Marianne Lindsey. ?We do hold some seats out for last-minute booking by our elite member frequent fliers and passengers with disabilities, but in general you should be able to find seats together for your family.?

Now and again, that can be a challenge, Lindsey said.

?In some instances, however, with full flights, families may not be seated together,? she said. ?In this instance, we do all that we can to accommodate families requesting seating together, including asking if there are other travelers that would be willing to change their seats for the family. If all four cannot be seated together we try to at least get one parent with each child. Oftentimes, once families are onboard, other travelers offer to move to accommodate the family, and our flight attendants help facilitate this.?
