South Africa call up Dean Elgar as Duminy?s replacement ? Cricket News Update
Cricket South Africa has named uncapped Dean Elgar as replacement for injured middle-order batsman, JP Duminy, for the ongoing three-match Test series against Australia, Down Under.
"We have opted for a like-for-like replacement," said Cricket South Africa selection convener Andrew Hudson during a media interaction after announcing Duminy?s replacement. "Dean can bat anywhere in the top order and he also gives us a back-up spin bowling option. He is currently in good form," he added further.
JP Duminy, a hard-hitting middle order batsman, and a useful right-arm off-spinner, had ruptured Achilles tendon in his left-ankle during a post-play warm-down with fitness trainer Rob Walter, on the opening day of the first Test, at Gabba, on Friday. The injury ruled Duminy out of not only the ongoing Gabba Test, but also the entire three-match series.
He underwent a surgery on his injured ankle on Saturday, and is expected to remain out? of the game for the next three to six months.
In the absence of the left-hander, top-order batsman Faf du Plessis remains the favourite to take the place in South Africa?s playing XI in the remaining two Tests of the series. But the Proteas also called up left-handed Knights? all-rounder Dean Elgar, to strengthen the squad.
Unlike Duminy, Elgar bats up the order, however his ability to bowl left-arm spin gives the tourists the same part-time bowling option as Duminy.
The 25-year-old left-hander made his international debut during South Africa?s five-match ODI series against England in August this year, and played in all the five matches of the series, scoring 93 runs in four-innings at 23.25.
"He had a good debut for the Proteas in their recent ODI series in England and he fully deserves his first call-up to our Test squad as well," said the CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson.
Elgar has to date played 74 first-class matches compiling a tally of 5326 runs at a healthy batting average of almost 45. His left-arm orthodox spin has also earned him 29 wickets.
The left-armer will travel to Australia only after his visa requirements have been processed, but with the second starting on November 22, he has enough time to meet the visa requirements. Before leaving for Down Under, Elgar will play a List A match for Knights on Sunday.
