The pigs hijack the Curiousity Mars Rover in Angry Birds Space for iPhone and iPad

Angry Birds Space, the one where Rovio's billion dollar birds chased their popular pigs clear out of orbit, has been updated in fairly geeky, spectacular fashion:

NASA and Angry Birds team up for the most epic episode yet! The piggies have hijacked the Curiosity Mars Rover -- but instead of searching for ice crystals, they're looking for eggs!

You get 20 new levels of Mars busting madness, as well as 2 more antenna egg levels. Work your way past enormous, explosive volcanoes, and avoid the firestorm of falling stars. And meet the new astronaut pig, whom I'm assuming has all the wrong stuff... Find three rovers and landers to reveal bonus levels, and learn even more about Curiosity Mars Rover and NASA.

The Angry Birds franchise certainly isn't new anymore, but they keep finding ways to give the hugely popular game fresh new angles and compelling new content, and bringing NASA and Curiosity Mars into it takes Angry Birds Space to a while new level. No pun intended.

Cause of global throat cancer epidemic a mystery

The "astounding" increase in cases of esophageal cancer around the world seems to have begun in the UK in the 1950s, but a recent comprehensive analysis of historical data has brought scientists no closer to identifying the cause. The new report into what medicos call a "global epidemic" appears in the journal Gut.

There are two distinct types of gullet (esophageal) cancer - squamous and adenocarcinoma, the latter typically affecting the lower third of the esophagus. It was first observed that diagnoses of adenocarcinoma were increasing rapidly in the mid-1980s, but the reasons behind this dramatic increase are still an enigma.

In a bid to identify any discernible patterns, the authors of the new report looked at data from 16 population based cancer registries in eight countries (Australia, Denmark, England, Finland, Norway, Scotland, Sweden and the US), going back between 29 and 54 years.

The researchers calculated the rates of the disease that would be expected to be diagnosed, according to the age of the population and looked at the timelines to see if there were particular flash points at which diagnoses suddenly increased.

They found that the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma continued to increase rapidly in all 16 registries, and there is little evidence that this trend is beginning to plateau. Men continue to be 3-9 times as likely to develop the disease as women - a pattern that has remained consistent over time.

The researchers note that in around half the registers, a low and seemingly stable rate of new diagnoses shifted abruptly to a rapidly and consistently linear increase. In the remainder of the registries, the rate had gone beyond a low and stable phase, and was already rising when registration started.

Timeline analysis indicated that the first discernible surge probably occurred around 1960 in Scotland and England, with a similar surge in the US starting in the mid-1970s, and another beginning in 1991 in Sweden.

The authors suggest that as the analysis was restricted to countries and regions with reliable and longstanding data, it seems unlikely that more than a fraction of these patterns could be attributable to mistakes in diagnosis.

Obesity, which is linked to acid reflux - a well known cause of the disease - has been rising rapidly, but the pattern does not fully match that of esophageal adenocarcinoma, say the authors, nor does it explain the gender difference seen in this type of cancer. Smoking rates do not appear to be linked either, and both factors are "unlikely to explain either the abrupt change or the astounding rate of increase," the authors note.

"Therefore," they conclude, "it seems reasonable to hypothesize that the effects of a strong, highly prevalent and yet unidentified causal factor - first introduced in the UK in the middle of the 20th century - have been superimposed on the effects of known risk factors."

Novel technique to synthesize nanocrystals that harvest solar energy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? One reason that solar energy has not been widely adopted is because light absorbing materials are not durable. Materials that harvest solar radiation for energy often overheat or degrade over time; this reduces their viability to compete with other renewable energy sources like wind or hydroelectric generators. A new video protocol addresses these issues by presenting a synthesis of two inorganic nanocrystals, each of which is more durable than their organic counterparts.

The article, published in Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), focuses on the liquid phase synthesis of two nanocrystals that produce hydrogen gas or an electric charge when exposed to light. "The main advantage of this technique is that it allows for direct, all inorganic coupling of the light absorber and the catalyst," says the leading author Dr. Mikhail Zamkov of Bowling Green State University.

Zamkov's nanocrystals are unique for two reasons: they separate charge in different ways due to their architectures, and they are inorganic and durable. The first nanocrystal is rod-shaped, which allows the charge separation needed to produce hydrogen gas, a reaction known as photocatalysis. The second nanocrystal is composed of stacked layers and generates electricity, thus being photovoltaic. Because the nanocrystals are inorganic, they are easier to recharge and less sensitive to heat than their organic counterparts. Zamkov's inorganic photocatalytic material allows a rechargeable reaction when exposed to cheap organic solvents, whereas in traditional photocatalytic reactions the catalyst is often irreversibly degraded. The photovoltaic nanocrystals can also withstand higher heat than the traditional photovoltaic cells that do not dissipate heat well.

"We have established a new method for making photocatalytic and photovoltaic materials. This is important primarily as a new strategy for making photovoltaic films that are 100% inorganic, thus producing a more stable solar panel. It is a design that you could reach marketability," Dr. Zamkov says. "It is important to have these steps documented in a video format, as the synthesis of the photocatalytic nanocrystals and the photovoltaic cells are long procedures with detailed steps. It makes our technique more visible and accessible."

Henry Ford Biopic To Center On His Forgotten Jungle City

Ambition is a major part of the American identity. From the Revolutionary War to Manifest Destiny to the evolution of American industry, much of our current zeitgeist has been forged by inextinguishable ambition and bold men with a view toward the future. One such man was Henry Ford, best known as founder of the Ford Motor Company and frequently credited as the father of the assembly line. But few know about the man's more romantic ambition to create small town America in the thick of the Brazilian Amazon.

This is the story at the center of the Greg Grandin-penned biography Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City, which Variety reports River Road Entertainment is developing into a feature film. Producers Bill Pohlad and Sarah Hammer have already hired screenwriter Ben Coccio, who co-wrote Derek Cianfrance's follow-up to the controversial Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines, to adapt the heralded book, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Like it's subject, the film itself must be ambitious as it's set in Fordlandia, a 1927 settlement twice the size of Delaware that the American industrialist set up in the Amazon to grow rubber. Fueled by his belief that workers deserved substantial wages for their work?a philosophy actually dubbed Fordism?he also attempted to include golf courses, ice-cream shops, bandstands, indoor plumbing and other American luxuries in his new colony. But despite his best efforts, culture clashes with the indigenous people and the jungle itself made it impossible for Ford to imprint his will onto the wild.

It's a fascinating and little known story that could prove topical as well as massive in scope. It'll be interesting to see how River Road chooses to develop this story, and what themes they'll pull from Ford's major misstep.
