Fed shot dead was buying cancer meds for dad

The federal agent gunned down outside a Long Island pharmacy was buying cancer medicine for his father when he died foiling a robbery, relatives said.

?He never walked away from anything,? said James Capano, 82, the father of John Capano, 51, an explosives expert with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives killed Saturday. ?He always got involved.?

?I don't know where he gets it from,? added James Capano, a retired NYPD detective. ?They say he got it from me.?

John Capano was shopping at Charlie?s Family Pharmacy in Seaford Saturday afternoon when the store was held up at gunpoint.

?I was going down to the store,? the elder Capano said. ?He said, ?No, I?ll go.??

?I should have gone,? he added. ?I?m just trying to accept it."

John Capano confronted the thief, identified Sunday as James McGoey, 43, of Hampton Bays, who was carrying stolen cash and OxyContin, outside the pharmacy.

Meanwhile, someone ran for help to the deli next door, and an off-duty NYPD cop and retired Nassau County lieutenant jumped into the action.

John Capano was shot in the mayhem. The robber then pointed his gun at the cop and retired lieutenant, sources said, and was fatally shot by one of them.

The names of the off-duty cop and retired lieutenant have not been released. They were uninjured but treated at a local hospital for trauma, officials said.

Investigators have been working to determine who fired the shot that killed Capano. FBI and ATF agents, along with Nassau County Police detectives, were in and out of the pharmacy Sunday.

?I have no idea,? James Capano said of the identity of his son?s shooter.

James Capano had planned to celebrate New Year?s Eve at his son?s house.

The family is grieving the death of James Capano?s wife of 57 years, Helen Capano, mother of John Capano. She died of cancer on Dec. 18.

James Capano said his son had volunteered to share his explosives expertise with military personnel in Iraq.

?He knew what he was doing, and he was the best one they had,? James Capano proudly said.

A tearful Rep. Peter King consoled the elder Capano on the blood-stained sidewalk outside the pharmacy New Year?s morning.

King?s wife was slain agent?s fourth grade teacher.

?I?ve known John Capano for years,? King said, recalling giving Capano an award for bravery during a four-month tour of Iraq and Afghanistan

?He had a unique personality, a great personality,? King said. ?Everybody loved him.?

King refused to speculate on how John Capano was killed.

?Unfortunately, I know all the people involved,? King said. ?Let?s wait for it all to come out.?

Iceland's president says he will step down in May (Reuters)

REYKJAVIK (Reuters) ? Icelandic President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, who twice called a referendum to bring down a debt settlement deal with the Netherlands and Britain, said on Sunday he would step down this year after 16 years in office.

Grimsson said in his yearly televised New Year address that he would not run for re-election in May.

One of the president's few formal powers is to refuse to sign a bill passed in parliament, which must then be put to a referendum. Grimsson is the only Icelandic president to have used the power.

In March 2010 and then again in April 2011, Icelanders voted to rejected bills intended to settle debts owed to Britain and the Netherlands as a result of the 2008 financial crisis, when British and Dutch savers had money in Icelandic accounts frozen.

"It is clear that both referendums gave the people of this country increased self-confidence, showed the way to increased democracy, and drew the attention and even the admiration of other countries," Grimsson said in a later statement.

Nevertheless, the "Icesave" dispute has held back Iceland's economic recovery from a catastrophic banking collapse and cast a shadow over its application to join the European Union, on which negotiations started in June.

All of Iceland's top commercial banks collapsed within a week in 2008, sending its currency and economy into a tailspin.

Strict capital controls have held up new investment and the economy remains fragile.

The estate of the collapsed Landsbanki made a first payment to the creditors last month and says the deposits will be repaid in full. However, the EFTA Surveillance Authority, which oversees Iceland's cooperation with the European Union, says it will take Iceland to court to try to force faster repayment.

Grimsson's announcement follows a reshuffle of the centre-left government on Friday after traditional end-of-year talks between the government and the president.

Man deported from Canada admits crimes: China (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's most wanted man, who was deported from Canada in July after a decades-long legal battle, has admitted to his crimes and will now be handed over to prosecutors, state media reported on Friday.

Beijing had sought the deportation of Lai Changxing for years, accusing him of running a multi-billion dollar smuggling ring in the southeastern city of Xiamen in the 1990s in one of China's biggest political scandals in decades.

Nothing has been heard of him since he was returned to China over the summer.

A brief report on state radio's website (www.cnr.cn) said the probe into his crimes had finished and that Lai would now be handed over to Xiamen prosecutors.

"Lai Changxing and other mainstay members of his criminal clique candidly confessed the facts of their smuggling and bribery crimes," state radio said.

The "legal rights" of Lai and the other suspects were "fully guaranteed," with Lai able to meet with his lawyer, the report added.

The investigation team carried out the probe "fairly and in accordance with the law," it said.

Lai may face life imprisonment, state media has reported. But some legal experts and human rights activists have said it was unlikely Lai could receive a fair trial in China.

The report did not say when Lai's case may come to trial.

The probe found that between 1996 and 1999, Lai and his accomplices smuggled cars, oil, chemicals, cigarettes and other goods and bribed "dozens" of government officials, state radio added.

"The figure involved was enormous," it said, without providing other details.

Lai, whose case had plagued Sino-Canadian relations, was sent back after a Canadian court dismissed concerns he could be tortured or executed back home.

Lai fled to Canada with his family in 1999 and claimed refugee status, saying the allegations against him were politically motivated.

China had promised Canada Lai would not be tortured or executed and that Canadian officials would have access to him.

Lai's alleged crimes occurred in the special economic zone of Xiamen in Fujian province in the mid-1990s when Jia Qinglin, now the ruling Communist Party's fourth most senior leader, was the province's Party boss.

Beijing has accused Lai's business empire, the Yuanhua Group, of bribing officials to allow a massive smuggling ring in a scandal that implicated more than 200 senior figures, including Jia's wife, Lin Youfang. She denied any wrongdoing.

Lai admitted in a 2009 interview with Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper that he had avoided taxes by exploiting loopholes in the law, but he denies bribery charges. He said he would have been executed had he not been in Canada.

China put more than 300 suspects on trial and sentenced 14 to death, including provincial officials and a former vice minister of public security, in a case Beijing has used for a propaganda campaign against corruption.
